Students move their star up the mountain when they choose a motivator to use to achieve different given goals. Praise, rewards, recognition, challenges, avoiding punishments, and finding interests, which will they use to motivate themselves? The goal is for students to learn about what motivates them and what does not so they can use this knowledge to complete their own goals.
